COLLINS AEROSPACE
Integrated Train Control SCADA (POC)
Collins Aerospace AIM Rail software enables freight and passenger railroads to maximize operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness, safety and cybersecurity. In collaboration with with our partner John O’Keefe Design, our team worked on a proof of concept (POC) prototype for the AIM Rail software.

Challenge
The goal of the project was to create a modern intuitive user experience for AIM Rail, which would allow for collaboration between users across processes and tasks. This type of experience would be supported by context aware information structures, and by interfaces accurately representing the real world situations faced by dispatchers.
Solution
Based on extensive research performed by Teague, we created a new design for the AIM Rail product focusing on the following principles:
- Right information at the right time.
- Empowerment through immediacy and trust.
- Multiple views complete the picture.
- Configuration not customization.
The prototype was created using Unity and React, and an integration with the Mapbox service to provide different map views in the app. The POC tackled some of the common tasks performed by dispatchers:
- Managing railroad tracks, vehicles, signals, and maintenance crews.
- Managing system alarms and notifications.
- Accessing CCTV feeds and other information from train stations.
- Collaboration through app messaging and notes.
- Switching between different city map alternatives.
